Page contains recommendations and links to book critiques that I have done. For each book there is a short paragraph and for most books a link to a lengthier critique. These books are chosen somewhat randomly. Some books have been required reading; some are secular and some are Christian.
I have rated each book 1-5. 5 is a great book. 4 is a good book. 3 is the average book. 2 is a poor book. 1 is a horrible book. The ratings are not based on how well they matched the Christian worldview–that is what the critique is for. Instead, these are my ratings; they show how much I enjoyed each book. A good (or bad) rating does not mean that I recommend the book.
- Silas Marner
This book gets a 3; but it is one of those I would not really recommend. The book was fine and it brings up some good topics, but there are better books to spend your time on.
Silas Marner was written by George Elliot in 1861. The book has two coincidental plots. The main plot is about the man Silas Marner. A man who becomes confused by being falsely accused and excommunicated by his church. He denies God and becomes a mysterious miser in the town of Raveloe. Eventually his hoarded gold is stolen and he is thrust into another similar crisis. This time he finds a baby girl who crawled away from her mother who overdosed in the nearby snowdrift. He loves the child and rears her as his own.
The secondary plot is about Godfrey Cass. He is the son of a nobleman and husband of the overdosed woman. He was hiding from this shameful marriage, but he does come to confess to his wife. He tries to adopt his daughter but Silas will not let him and she is unwilling. However he does secretly provide for them financially.
